Pack Once, Move Better: 10 Packing Tips for Your Next Move

Learn how to pack and store items for a move with 10 practical tips for boxes, furniture, fragile belongings, storage units, and moving day.

Packing for a move gets easier when you make decisions about organization before the boxes start piling up. What goes into each box, how you label it, and which belongings you pack first all affect how smoothly loading, temporary storage, and unpacking go later.

Storage can also give you some breathing room when your move-out and move-in dates don't line up, or you need to clear rooms before moving day. At Apex Storage, we offer

           storage options in Sandy

for household belongings and moving needs, including drive-up and climate-controlled options. Our Santaquin property also serves movers in southern Utah County, with a location on State Road 198 near I-15. If you're figuring out how to store items for a move, start with the packing itself. These ten tips will help you protect your belongings, keep boxes manageable, and avoid creating extra work when it's time to unpack.

           1. Sort Before You Start Packing

Moving something you no longer want means packing it, carrying it, finding room for it, and eventually unpacking it. Sorting first removes that work before it starts. Go room by room and decide what will move with you, what needs temporary storage, and what you no longer plan to keep. This is also the right time to identify belongings that shouldn't disappear into the back of a box. Important documents, medications, keys, chargers, basic toiletries, a few changes of clothes, and anything you'll need immediately at the new home should stay separate from the main packing process. Don't try to finish the entire house before putting anything into a box. Complete one room or category at a time. A smaller working area makes it easier to see what's already packed and what still needs attention.

           2. Make an Inventory Before Choosing Storage Space

If part of your move involves a storage unit, estimate how much you're storing before choosing one. Count your boxes and make a separate note of furniture, appliances, bicycles, shelving, and awkwardly shaped pieces that won't fit into standard containers.

           Our

           storage unit size guide

starts with the same basic process: identify what can go into boxes, list the larger items separately, estimate quantities, and then compare that inventory with available unit sizes. It's much more useful than choosing a space based on a rough guess.

Keep the inventory after you've selected your space. A simple room-by-room list gives you a record of what went into storage and saves you from opening several boxes later to find one item.

           3. Use Boxes That Are Easy to Stack and Carry

A huge box isn't necessarily a useful box. Heavy belongings such as books become difficult to lift when they're packed into oversized containers, while lighter items can take advantage of larger boxes without creating the same problem. Try to keep box sizes reasonably consistent where possible. Boxes with flat, secure tops are easier to arrange in a moving truck and inside a unit, and they create a more stable base when you're stacking several levels.

Before packing a used cardboard box, check the bottom, corners, and seams. If the cardboard has softened or the base is damaged, use another container rather than trusting it with belongings that have to survive loading, transportation, storage, and another round of unloading.

           4. Pack One Room at a Time

Mixing items from several rooms into the same box feels efficient while packing, but it creates extra sorting at the other end. Keeping bedroom belongings with bedroom belongings and kitchen items with kitchen items gives every box a clear destination.

Finish each box before moving to the next one. Fill unused space with suitable lightweight packing material so the contents don't shift excessively, then close and label the container while you still remember exactly what's inside.

This method also makes staged moves easier. If some belongings are going directly to the new house and others are going into storage first, you can divide them without sorting through mixed boxes again.

           5. Label More Than the Room Name

"KITCHEN" tells you where a box belongs. "KITCHEN: baking dishes and mixing bowls" tells you whether it's the box you need. A little more information on the label saves a surprising amount of searching later. Mark at least two visible sides so you can identify a box even when its top is covered by another container. If the contents are fragile, mark that clearly too, but don't rely on the word "fragile" as a substitute for proper packing.

Numbering boxes is useful for a larger move. Pair each number with your inventory, and you'll have a quick way to check that everything reached the new home or storage unit without writing an exhaustive contents list across every carton.

           6. Give Fragile Items Their Own Packing Plan

Fragile belongings shouldn't be packed according to how much empty room is left in a box. Wrap pieces individually when needed, protect them from direct contact with each other, and fill open space so they aren't shifting each time the box is lifted.

Don't overload the container simply because there's space remaining. A box holding breakable dishes or decor still has to be carried, set down, stacked, transported, and handled again when you unpack.

Electronics, photographs, documents, artwork, and certain furniture also deserve extra thought if they'll spend part of the move in storage. Our Sandy and Santaquin facilities have climate-controlled storage among their available features, so you can compare that option with standard storage based on the belongings you're putting away.

           7. Prepare Furniture Before Moving Day

Furniture takes up a large share of the space in a moving truck or storage unit, so prepare it before the truck arrives. Empty drawers and cabinets, remove loose shelves or other detachable pieces where practical, and keep hardware associated with the correct piece.

If you disassemble furniture, label the components before they're separated. Put screws, bolts, and other small hardware into a clearly marked bag rather than dropping everything into one container for the entire house.

Measure bulky pieces and doorways before moving day, especially if you're unsure whether something will clear an entrance. Finding out that a large piece needs to be disassembled is much easier before it's halfway through a doorway.

           8. Pack for the Order You'll Need Things

The first box packed shouldn't automatically become the first box you need. Think ahead to what can stay packed for several weeks and what you'll want immediately after arriving at the new home. Seasonal decor, extra linens, books, and rarely used household items can usually be packed earlier. Everyday kitchen supplies, current clothing, basic tools, and other frequently used belongings should stay accessible longer.

Use the same logic when loading a storage unit. Items you expect to retrieve sooner belong closer to the accessible area, while belongings intended to remain stored throughout the move can go farther back. At our Sandy and Santaquin properties, drive-up access is available, which is useful when you're moving boxes and furniture between a vehicle and your space.

           9. Leave Yourself Room to Reach Stored Belongings

Using every available inch isn't always the best way to organize a unit. If you'll need something before moving everything into the new home, don't bury it behind furniture and stacks of boxes. Keep frequently needed belongings toward the front and make labels face outward where possible. For a larger amount of storage, leaving a usable path into the space can prevent you from having to unload several stacks to reach one container.

Santaquin movers should also plan the loading process around the property itself. Our facility is at 625 North State Road 198 near I-15 and offers drive-up access and wide aisles, so organizing belongings before arrival can keep the unloading process focused instead of turning the unit doorway into a sorting area.

           10. Keep Moving-Day Essentials Out of Storage

Some belongings should travel with you rather than disappear into a moving truck or storage space. Keep identification, important paperwork, medications, keys, phones and chargers, and other necessities where you can reach them throughout the move.

If you're changing addresses within Utah, administrative tasks belong on the moving checklist too. The Utah Driver License Division requires residents to update their address with the division within 10 days of moving. Changing an address with the U.S. Postal Service does not update the driver's license record.

Prepare one clearly identified container for the first day or night in the new home. Pack the household basics you'll actually need before you've had time to open the rest of the boxes. Keep that container with you or load it where it won't be trapped behind everything else.

           Give Your Move Some Room

Good packing isn't about fitting the maximum possible amount into every box. It's about knowing what you've packed, protecting what matters, and arranging belongings so they remain manageable through every stage of the move. Temporary storage can be particularly useful when you're moving in stages, preparing a home before the moving date, or waiting for the next space to be ready. Our Sandy property is on Harrison Street, while our Santaquin property is on State Road 198 near I-15. Both list daily access from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., along with drive-up and climate-controlled storage options.
